Police Entice Woman to Snitch, Get Her Killed, Blame Her for Her Death
NORML reports on the death of Rachael Hoffman, another disgusting and preventable death caused by the war on drugs and the reckless police tactics it has inspired.
Hoffman was caught selling marijuana and ecstasy in Florida. After threatening her with prison time, the police then gave Hoffman the option of becoming an informant–without first consulting with her lawyer. They set up a deal with her connection. What happened in between isn’t yet clear. But they found her body late last week.
Proving once again that the most dangerous thing about illicit drugs like ecstasy and marijuana isn’t the drugs themselves. It’s what the government does to you after you’re caught with them. [The Agitator]
Watch this video, in which Tallahassee Police Chief Jones blames Rachael for her own death and then says, “we are aggressively seeking justice for Rachael and her family.”
If Chief Jones wants justice he should start by fixing the protocols he claims his officers adhered to. They sent Rachael in to purchase an uncharacteristic amount of drugs, along with a gun, just to ramp up the charges even higher. Their insatiable lust for big busts and big headlines gave them away and got their informant killed. There’s nothing complicated about this. No nuances to debate. It’s horrible policing brought on by a horrible war, which produced another horrible outcome.
Note: If you get arrested, speak with a lawyer immediately and do not fall for the common tricks police use to recruit snitches. They may tell you that this is your only chance to make a deal. They may exaggerate how much trouble you’re already in, so as to leverage your cooperation. Frequently, people arrested for drugs endanger their own lives by becoming informants, when a lawyer could have gotten them off altogether. The drug war feeds on these coercive tactics, creating crimes that would never have occurred, and ruining one life after the next. Don’t fall for it.

Something old that can remind us of something new. It’s the classic Monty Python sketch about the dead parrot:

Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and the most prominent and powerful gay politician in the country. The New York Times has a profile of him in today’s edition.
And it is with great glee, usually to emphasize a centrist position on an issue, that he quotes Republican warnings in a 2006 campaign advertisement that he would pursue a “radical homosexual agenda” were Democrats to win control of Congress…
Within the administration, where some high-level officials privately refer to him as “scary smart,” no one is underestimating him….
“Because he is looking to get things done and make a difference, he focuses on areas of agreement and tries to build on those,” Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said. “He doesn’t waste anybody’s time, your time or his.” …And, he added, “It’s always more fun to work with someone who has got a sense of humor.”
“I used to be someone subject to this prejudice, and, through luck, circumstance, I got to be a big shot,” he said during debate on the employment nondiscrimination bill in November. “I am now above that prejudice. But I feel an obligation to 15-year-olds dreading to go to school because of the torments, to people afraid that they will lose their job in a gas station if someone finds out who they love.”
Barney is doing us proud! [Read the full article here]
And if you’re curious to read more about this courageous and principled gay American, then we recommend you to Barney Frank’s Wikipedia entry which includes an item that may surprise you:
In 2006, Frank was one of only three Representatives to oppose the Respect for America’s Fallen Heroes Act, which restricted protests (notably those of Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church) at soldiers’ funerals. He opposed the bill, which passed unanimously in the Senate, on civil liberties and constitutional grounds. Frank said of the vote, “I think it’s very likely to be found unconstitutional. It’s true that when you defend civil liberties you are typically defending people who do obnoxious things… You play into their hand when you let them provoke you into overdoing it. I don’t want these thugs to claim America is hypocritical.”

Fort Snelling was the first major U.S. military presence in the state….
In the 1850s, Fort Snelling played a key role in the infamous Dred Scott court case. Slaves Dred Scott and his wife were taken to the fort by their master, John Emerson. They lived at the fort and elsewhere in territories where slavery was prohibited. After Emerson’s death, the Scotts argued that since they had lived in free territory, they were no longer slaves. Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court sided against the Scotts. Dred Scott Field, located just a short distance away in Bloomington, is named in the memory of Fort Snelling’s significance in one of the most important legal precedents in U.S. History.
We hate spam SO much. It’s very depressing to consider that now the spammers intend to chase us down on our cell phones!
Some industry executives, along with consumer groups and security experts, are concerned that unwanted text messages on phones will be an even greater headache than unwanted computer messages.
…But inconvenience is not the only downside; there is also the threat of viruses as phones become more like personal computers. Some companies are already preparing for this.
We say, execute a few of them in the proverbial public square and maybe they’ll go find regular jobs.
